| Why is 4Front School of Guitar better than a music school or an independent tutor? |
4Front School of Guitar uses the Future of Music Education Model in it’s delivery of guitar lessons. You deal directly with a Registered 4Front School of Guitar Tutor and not with a middleman like you do in a music school or music centre. By cutting out the middle man students and families can have direct communication with the tutor and we can keep our prices reasonable.
Registered 4Front School of Guitar Tutors are highly skilled guitar teachers who are trained in all aspect of the 4Front School of Guitar programme. They are resourced through regular professional development meetings and a growing online resource of supporting material for teaching.

| What is the best age to start learning the guitar? |
Any age, it’s never too late to start and all that is required is a desire to learn. We recommend that the earliest age to start is 7 years old, or school year. By age 7 students can usually handle a ¾ size guitar and have the finger strength and cognitive understanding to progress quickly.

| Do students need a guitar? |
It is vital that students have their own guitar. Beginner’s guitars can be purchased from between 100 to 300 dollars and are designed especially for students. Your registered 4Front School of Guitar Tutor may have a second hand guitar as we are currently working on a guaranteed buyback programme for when more advanced students upgrade their guitars. We suggest you visit your local MusicWorks store for their wide range of guitars and excellent service.

| What is the best kind of guitar to start on? |
4Front School of Guitar recommends that students beginning to learn the guitar use an acoustic nylon string guitar. This guitar comes in a variety of sizes and the nylon strings are easier on the beginner’s fingers. These guitars are also reasonably priced and often come in packages which include a case and strap.
For more information, read our guide on what to look for when buying a guitar.

| How often are the lessons? |
Lessons are held once a week during the school terms. These last for between 8 to 10 weeks depending on the length of the school term. Students who decide to sit their International Trinity College Exams will also need to particpate in a few extra lessons during the school holidays before they sit their exam.
| How long are the lessons? |
Lesson length should be determined by how much a student can retain, practise and master before the next lesson. From this perspective our lessons are thirty minutes long. This is the best amount of time to teach the necessary skills and they can then be consolidated during practise over the following week.
| How much do the lessons cost? |
Group lessons cost between $14 to $16 and individual lessons (available to secondary students and above) cost between $20 and $30. Lessons are payable on a term by term basis and are due by the second lesson of each term. Some teachers are GST registered so you will need to check with them about this also.
| How much practise do the students need to do? |
Here at 4Front School of Guitar we suggest beginning students do a high number of short practises. While new students are developing their skills they will only have a few songs to practise so we suggest 5 -10 minutes twice a day. The best way to achieve this is to leave the guitar out of the case and in a handy spot. Here it will be picked up and played far more often than when it’s in a case tucked away in a cupboard somewhere.
Once students have progressed and have a wider repertoire of songs and skills their practise time will naturally increase. By the second year of lessons students need to be practising for about ½ an hour each day or at least three to four times a week.

| Does 4Front School of Guitar offer exams? |
Yes, but we know that exams are not for everyone, so they are available for those who want to sit them. To ensure 4Front students are examined to an internation standard we offer the exams through Trinity College London. They are held in May /June and October / November each year.

As students progress into more advanced skills and a wider variety of songs other books may need to be purchased. These books include the Trinity College plectrum guitar and electric guitar (rock school) grade books. 4Front School of Guitar is also developing an online library of guitar based resources that tutors and students can access.
